MANAGEMENT
Research from Wing Tam
‘The term management refers to the process of getting things done, effectively and efficiently, through and with other people.’ Defined by Robbins and David in the book ‘Fundamentals of Management’.
Gerald A. Cole further explained management process enable organisations to set and achieve their objectives by planning, organising and controlling their resources, including gaining the commitment of their employees (motivation).
As Gerald mentioned in the definition, management in collaboration acts an important role to obtain positive synergy allowing the team to increase performance by planning, organising, controlling and directing.
Planning in management includes deciding the common objectives or goals of the team and preparing how they can be achieved. According to the chnaging in environment, planning can establish coordinated effort in order to provide direction, reduce impact of change, set standards to facilitate control, and minimize the waste and redundancy.
Organising in management refers to determine the activities and allocate coordinating activities and responsibilities into a collaborative structure. Authorities and responsibilities of different parties or different members within the collaboration should be allocated balanced and suitable based on their talent and speciality in order to implement the planning effectively.
Directing in management includes motivating team members, directing activities of others, selecting the most effective communication channel, and resolving conflicts to achieve fulfilment of organisational goals. In the collaboration, a leader may be appointed or emerge from within a group, a leader can influence others and leading others in the right direction.
Controlling in management can be defined as a process consists of three separate and distinct steps including monitoring of the parties, evaluating of activities and providing corrective mechanisms. The first step monitoring of the parties is a measuring of the actual performance, secondly evaluating the activities by comparing the actual performance and the required standard and finally managerial action should be taken to correct such deviations or inadequate standards.
Management is a large topic and can be applied into every company practically. This is difficult to explain many theories by such four processes, but it is obviously even within a group work in class, or a virtual environment on internet, management is always necessary to ensure it is working effectively.
